  • With funding boosted by the Olympic Games, Utah’s 511 system was launched in December 2001 as part of  the CommuterLink family of travel info services. The system is voice-activated, so callers can operate the system hands-free. The system receives thousands of calls each day.

  • The nation's first 511 service was launched in June 2001 in Northern Kentucky and the Cincinnati metro area. The service is an evolution of the traveler information service that has been in place there since 1997. Call volume increased by 20 percent following a local 511 marketing campaign. Kentucky will kick off statewide 511 service with a Labor Day weekend 2002 marketing campaign.

  • Nebraska’s road information line has been converted to a 511 service.

  • The San Francisco Bay Area’s TravInfo® system will convert to 511 later this year.
The system will be voice-activated and will provide traffic, public transportation, and rideshare information. In addition to highway and rideshare agencies, over two dozen public transportation agencies will participate.

  • The initial phase of Minnesota's 511 implementation was completed in the fall of 2001. This spring, Mn/DOT will launch abbreviated 511 dialing access to all wireless and wireline calls, voice recognition for menu navigation, improved report formats, menu structure and options, and additional Twin Cities metropolitan area traffic and Metro Transit schedule information.
