- Arizona will become the fifth area of the country
to deploy when it launches statewide 511 service on March 20, 2002.
- With funding
boosted by the Olympic Games, Utah’s 511 system was launched
in December 2001 as part of the CommuterLink family of travel info
services. The system is voice-activated, so callers can operate the
system hands-free. The system receives thousands of calls each day.
- Virginia launched voice-activated 511 service
along the I-81 Corridor, a major truck corridor in the rural western
part of the state, in February 2002.
- The nation's first 511 service was launched
in June 2001 in Northern Kentucky and the Cincinnati metro area. The
service is an evolution of the traveler information service that has
been in place there since 1997. Call volume increased by 20 percent
following a local 511 marketing campaign. Kentucky will kick
off statewide 511 service with a Labor Day weekend 2002 marketing campaign.
- Nebraska’s road information line has been converted
to a 511 service.
- The San Francisco Bay Area’s
TravInfo® system will convert to 511 later this year.
The system will be voice-activated and will provide traffic, public
transportation, and rideshare information. In addition to highway and
rideshare agencies, over two dozen public transportation agencies will
participate.
- The initial phase of Minnesota's
511 implementation was completed in the fall of 2001. This spring, Mn/DOT
will launch abbreviated 511 dialing access to all wireless and wireline
calls, voice recognition for menu navigation, improved report formats,
menu structure and options, and additional Twin Cities metropolitan
area traffic and Metro Transit schedule information.
