The ITS Standards program objective is to finalize and demonstrate the ability of ITS standards to facilitate integration of Corridor Management technologies and systems. An additional objective is to provide standards of value to facilities, centers, and operators within a corridor for supporting corridor management strategies, creating interoperability of systems, control and sharing of technologies and data, and interchangeability of technologies. The vision is to deploy standards in conjunction with Integrated Corridor Management (ICM) strategies and operations to prove their effectiveness and results. Several specific standards are being considered as a part of ICM strategies.
For control and real time management, the traffic signal standards under consideration are:
- National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocol (NTCIP)
- Actuated Traffic Signal Controller Units (ASC)
- NTCIP Signal Systems Masters
- NTCIP Signal Control and Prioritization (SCP)
- Advanced Transportation Controller (ATC)
- ATC Cabinet
- ATC Application Programming Interface (API)
Device standards providing control and real time management are:
- NTCIP Dynamic Message Signs (DMS)
- NTCIP Ramp Metering
- NTCIP Transportation Sensor System (TSS)
The Transit Communications Interface Profiles (TCIP) standards provide control and real time management of transit in the corridor.
Data sharing standards under consideration are:
- NTCIP Center-to-Center (C2C)
- Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS) message sets
- SAE Location Referencing Message Sets (LRMS)
- NTCIP TSS
- NTCIP CCTV Camera Control
For monitoring conditions along a corridor the NTCIP TSS, Signal and CCTV standards will be considered as well as the Transit TCIP standards. A combination of the aforementioned standards will be used when providing alternative choices of mode or routes to travelers.
Standards Development Organizations
The Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) develop and publish the ITS Standards. The standards under consideration for the Integrated Corridor Management Initiative vary in their status: in development, in ballot, approved or published. The SDOs work under cooperative agreements with the Federal Highway Administration and will publish these standards on or before FY2007.
In FY2005 ITS Standards training courses are available for ITS Standards Overview, Center-to-Center, DMS and ASC/ATC. This training is provided by the Institute of Transportation Engineers. As new standards are completed the ITE training will be expanded. Additionally the American Public Transportation Association will update and deliver a training course for TCIP.
