Next Generation 9 1 1 (NG9-1-1)
What It Is
The Nation’s 9-1-1 system, based on decades-old technology, cannot handle the text, data, images and video that are increasingly common in personal communications and critical to future transportation safety and mobility advances. The goal of the NG9-1-1 Initiative is to establish the foundation for public emergency services in a wireless mobile society and ultimately enable enhanced 9-1-1 (E9-1-1) to function with most types of communication devices. This will result in:
- Quicker and more accurate information delivery to responders (affecting timeliness and responder safety).
- Better and more useful forms of information (data, images and video).
- More flexible, secure and robust public safety answering point operations.
- Lower public capital and operating costs for emergency communications services.
To accomplish this, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has been working closely with public and private 9-1-1 stakeholders to define the system architecture and develop a transition plan that considers responsibilities, costs, schedule and benefits for deploying IP-based emergency services
across the United States.
Current Status
USDOT has published a preliminary concept of operations for NG9-1-1, has implemented a strategic outreach plan, has developed and validated requirements for the NG9-1-1 system. In July 2007, the Systems Description and High Level Requirements document was published. The NG9-1-1 continues to engage public and private stakeholders and to monitor standards development activities, is documenting the system architecture, and is designing a proof-of-concept demonstration system.
