Integrated Vehicle-Based Safety Systems

An integrated countermeasure system could prevent over 48 percent of rear-end, run-off-road, and lane change crashes. Through the Integrated Vehicle-Based Safety Systems initiative, the U.S. DOT is seeking to establish a partnership with the automotive and commercial vehicle industries to accelerate the introduction of integrated vehicle-based safety systems into the Nation's vehicle fleet.

• New Report Now Available: "Integrated Vehicle-Based Safety Systems Light-Vehicle On-Road Test Report” [PDF], by Ryan Harrington, Andy Lam, Emily Nodine, John J. Ference, and Wassim G. Najm. This report presents results from a series of on-road verification tests performed to determine the readiness of the light-vehicle prototype integrated warning system to advance to field testing. In addition, areas of system performance that required improvements prior to the start of the field test (currently planned for 2009) were identified.
• New Report Now Available: "Integrated Vehicle-Based Safety Systems Heavy-Truck On-Road Test Report” [PDF], by Ryan Harrington, Andy Lam, Emily Nodine, John J. Ference, and Wassim G. Najm. This report presents results from a series of on-road verification tests performed to determine the readiness of the heavy-truck prototype integrated warning system to advance to field testing. In addition, areas of system performance that required improvements prior to the start of the field test (currently planned for 2009) were identified.
• New Report Now Available: "Integrated Vehicle-Based Safety Systems – Preliminary Field Operational Test (FOT) Plan" [PDF], by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), Ann Arbor, MI. This report describes the preliminary plans for the field operational test phase of the IVBSS Program. The FOT will include 16 passenger cars and 10 commercial trucks equipped with the prototype integrated crash avoidance system and cover an approximately 12-month time period. A final version of this plan should be available in late February 2009.
• New Report Now Available: "Integrated Vehicle-Based Safety Systems – Phase I Interim Report” [PDF], by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), Ann Arbor, MI. This report describes accomplishments and progress made during Phase I of the program (November 2005 to April 2008). Activities during Phase I focused on system specification and design, development, and construction of prototype vehicles.
