What is Human Factors Engineering (a.k.a. human factors)?
The application of knowledge about human abilities, limitations, and other human characteristics to the design of equipment, tasks, and jobs.

What are the goals of human factors research in the Intelligent Vehicle Initiative (IVI)?
  1. To assess and enhance compatibility between operating features of advanced driver assistance systems and the capabilities of the driving population.
  2. To minimize the degradation of driving performance that could be caused by driver distraction from using advanced in-vehicle information systems.

What is the IVI Human Factors (HF) research process?
The chart below shows the three major steps in the IVI research process. Bulleted points show major methods used to collect the necessary human factors data.

How does human factors research contribute to IVI?
  1. Helps us to understand driver performance, behaviors, limitations, and errors that contribute to crashes.
  2. Identifies potential technologies that can assist drivers to perform driving tasks more safely.
  3. Tests and evaluates how the design and operation of IVI technology influences driver behavior and performance.
  4. Evaluates the usability and effectiveness of crash avoidance countermeasures.

Is there a summary of past human factors research in one document?
Yes! The "Technical Synthesis of IVI Human Factors Research", a compendium of IVI human factors research, was recently completed. The report will be available and posted online later in 2004.

What is the status of current IVI Human Factors Research?
Download the current PowerPoint slide presentation on IVI Human Factors.
