Meeting: Second Review of System Requirements Specification
When: September 20 - 22nd, 2011
Where: San Jose, California
The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) will be hosting the second of its free public meetings with accompanying webinars to discuss the connected vehicle Core System Requirements and Architecture. The first meeting, in Washington, DC in June, walked through the first review of System Requirements Specification and Proposed Architecture. This second meeting, in San Jose, California, will be a review of the final System Architecture and the associated requirements. These meetings and webinar are being organized by the Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office (ITS JPO) which is part of the Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA). To learn more about the ITS JPO visit the program’s website at www.its.dot.gov.
About the Connected Vehicle Core System Project:
The connected vehicle Core System will support applications for – safety, mobility, and sustainability – and all of the modes – passenger vehicle, transit, and heavy truck. This work is the successor to work originally performed under the Vehicle Infrastructure Integration Proof of Concept (VII POC). The Core System supports a distributed, diverse set of applications. These applications use both wireless and wire line communications to provide:
- Wireless communications with and between mobile elements including vehicles (of all types), pedestrians, cyclists, and other transportation users
- Wireless communications between mobile elements and field infrastructure
- Wireless and wire line communications between mobile elements, field infrastructure, and back office/center
About the Connected Vehicle Core System Meetings:
At these meetings, ITS JPO will walk through the Core System Requirements Specification and Architecture Document, including a system overview, detailed system requirements review and architecture review from various viewpoints. The feedback obtained during the meeting will be considered for the USDOT'S continuing research.
About the Connected Vehicle Research Program
Connected Vehicle research at U.S. Department of Transportation is a multimodal program that involves using wireless communication between vehicles, infrastructure, and personal communications devices to improve safety, mobility, and environmental sustainability. The program is the major research initiative of the Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office (ITS JPO) which is currently working with the eight major automotive companies to develop vehicle crash warning applications using Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) technology. In addition, ITS JPO is working to develop of myriad of applications which will use data collected from connected vehicles that can improve safety, mobility and sustainability. There is also connected vehicle-related research in the areas of standards, data collection, certification, policy, road weather and public transportation. The current strategy is to prepare the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for an agency decision in 2013. This decision will determine whether the agency proceeds with a regulatory activities that could require this technology on new vehicles, consumer information programs that help new car buyers understand the effectiveness of this technology, or the need for further research and development.
