•Bullet #1 is based on a 2007 study by Booz Allen Hamilton for FTA “Assessing the Business Case for Integrated Collision Avoidance Systems on Transit Buses”.
•
•Bullets #2 and #3 are statistics based on FARS (Fatality Analysis Reporting System) maintained by NHTSA.
•Bottom Line: Transit is VERY SAFE, compared to other modes of transportation.
•Bar Graph:
•passenger fatality rate 2003 – 2008

•Pedestrian is a safety challenge when it comes to transit safety.
•
•Transit experience much fewer fatalities for off-road and roll-over crashes than all vehicles.
4
•Rear-end is a prominent crash type among fatal transit vehicle crashes:
•When involved in rear-end crashes, buses were rear-ended by others about 75% of the time, meaning buses rear-ending other vehicles 25% of the time (about 3:1 ratio).
•When bus were rear-ended by others, in most cases (over 50%) buses were not moving (such as traffic light or bus stop).
•
•Angle Crashes (including left-turn head-on crashes):
•About 60% of the time buses were going straight, 20% of the time when buses were making turning movement.

•Explain that the selected intersection is between (and links) the off-campus housing area (e.g., apartments complex) and the University Hospital (a major travel origin/destination) -- high pedestrian volume.

•SmartWalk Motion Detector:
•Uses a microprocessor-analyzed Doppler detection method (based on a 24.125 GHz microwave transmitter receiver system)
•Mounted at 10’ with an Angle of 15˚ provides coverage starting ~10’ from pole and extending 55’ in an elliptical pattern.  The maximum width is ~15’.
•Mounting optimally needs to be centered in crosswalk
•Weight is 4lbs
•
•Data Inputs:
•Bus’ intersection ID and whether bus turns right or left
•Intersection ID where ped detection equipment exists
•Bus’ current GPS location
•Bus’ current GPS time
•Intersection geometry (MAP)
•Intersection targets (SPaT)
•Bus’ gear position
•Security credential management
