The technologies and systems deployed for V2I safety applications may also play a key role in supporting transformative mobility applications.  Mobility application research is being conducted in three related connected vehicle programs.

The Real-Time Data Capture and Management program is conducting research related to multi-source data environments combining wirelessly connected vehicles, mobile devices, and fixed sensor locations.

The Dynamic Mobility Applications (DMA) has defined and is engaged in prototyping six bundles of applications enabled by data from wirelessly connected vehicles and travelers. The Road-Weather Program also has defined a set of applications to leverage these new forms of data.

One DMA bundle with a strong link to the V2I systems we are working on is the Multi-modal Intelligent Transportation (M-ISIG) effort.  This bundle integrates data collected through wireless communications and other sources to improve traffic signal operations.  This includes overarching system optimization application accommodating transit and freight signal priority, preemption and pedestrian movements to maximize overall arterial network performance.

M-ISIG concept development and prototyping is currently underway as a pooled fund effort (Virginia DOT, lead)
