•HOWEVER WE DO HAVE THE SUPPORT OF THE SAIC TEAM HERE TODAY…… BOTH IN THE ROOM: RT CARTER AND NICK OWEN, AND ON THE PHONE, DIANE NEWTON.

•THE SCOPE OF THE SMART ROADSIDE INITIATIVE IS TO INTEGRATE EXISTING AND EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES THAT LINK COMMERCIAL VEHICLE OPERATIONS TO OTHER ITS SYSTEMS TO CREATE AN INFORMATION RICH ROADSIDE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM
•THE VISION IS FOR TRANSPORTATION STAKEHOLDERS THAT COLLECT DATA FOR THEIR OWN PURPOSES – TO SHARE THAT DATA SEEMLESSLY WITH RELEVANT PARTIES TO IMPROVE SAFETY, SECURITY AND ALSO INCREASE EFFICIENCY AND MOBILITY

•LOOKING AT IT MORE CLOSELY, THE SMART ROADSIDE MUST PROVIDE AN APPROPRIATE SET OF PATHWAYS AND GENERIC MECHANISMS FOR THE EFFICIENT EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION BETWEEN A VEHICLE AND THE ROADSIDE INTERFACE
•IT MUST ACCOUNT FOR THE CONNECTIONS REQUIRED TO SUPPORT THE FUNCTIONS OF THE RELATED DOT EFFORTS: E-SCREENING/VIRTUAL WEIGH STATIONS, WIRELESS ROADSIDE INSPECTION, TRUCK PARKING AND UNIVERSAL TRUCK IDENTIFICATION

•SO HOW DO WE DO IT?  ONE ANSWER IS THRU FMCSA’S GRANT PROGRAM CVISN. STATES THAT HAVE STATISFIED THE CORE REQUIREMENTS ARE ALREADY EXCHANGING SAFETY INFORMATION, DOING ELECTRONIC SCREENING AND CREDENTIALING
•WORKING BEYOND THE CORE REQUIRMENTS TO EXPANDED CVISN IS WHERE THE SMART ROADSIDE COMES INTO PLAY. EXPANDED CVISN GRANTS CAN BE USED FOR ENHANCING THE SAFETY INFORMATION EXCHANGE, USING TECHNOLOGIES AS VIRTUAL WEIGH STATIONS AND LICENSE PLATE AND DOT NUMBER READERS

•LOOKING AT THE COMMERCIAL VEHICLE ROADMAP, I’D LIKE TO PROVIDE AN UPDATE ON THE WORK THAT HAS BEEN ONGOING THIS YEAR, INDICATED IN THE FIRST FEW BOXES OF TRACK ONE

•AS I MENTIONED SAIC HAS BEEN TASKED WITH WORK IN THESE FOUR MAIN AREAS:
•FIRST PERFORMING A LITERATURE REVIEW, USER NEEDS ASSESSMENT, AND DEVELOPING THE APPLICATION PRIORITIZATION

•SECONDLY, DEVELOPING A CONCEPT OF OPERATIONS

•DEVELOP AND AND TEST THE PROTOTYPE
•
•AND THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE PROJECT FACILITATE STAKEHOLDER OUTREACH TO ENSURE A TRANSPARENT PROCESS

•IN TERMS OF THE ASSESSMENT OF EXISTING DEPLOYED SYSTEMS THE FOCUS WAS ON THE STATES AND THEIR LEVEL OF CVISN ACTIVITIES
•
•THE LITERATURE REVIEW FOCUSED ON PAST ITS RESEARCH PROJECTS TO DEFINE A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SRI AND THE V2I PORTION OF THE CONNECTED VEHICLE RESEARCH PROGRAM
•
•THIS WORK HAS BEEN COMPLETED AND CONTRIBUTED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CONCEPT OF OPERATIONS

•THE CONOPS BROUGHT TOGETHER PUBLIC AND PRIVATE STAKEHOLDERS TO INCORPORATE THE MAIN FOCUS AREAS I MENTIONED EARLIER
•UNIVERSAL TRUCK ID
•SAFETY INFORMATION EXCHANGE
•E-SCREENING
•AND WIRELESS ROADSIDE INSPECTION
•
•AND TO LOOK AT THE GOVERNANCE IN TERMS OF PERFORMANCE BASED STANDARDS AND ARCHITECTURE
•
•THE FIRST DRAFT OF THE CONOPS IS COMPLETE AND CURRENTLY BEING REVIEWED BY DOT, AND OTHER TEAM MEMBERS AT ATRI and CVSA
•
•THE GOAL IS TO PUBLISH THE CONOPS IN SEPTEMBER
•

•UPON COMPLETION OF THE CONOPS THE NEXT EFFORT IS THE SRI PROTOTYPE, IF YOU LOOK AT THE ROADMAP,
•
•THE FIRST PORTION OF THE WORK, UP THROUGH DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING, IS SCHEDULED FOR NEXT YEAR
•
•THE INSTALLATION AND FIELD TESTING IS SCHEDULED TO TAKE PLACE IN 2013 AND INTO 2014.

•LOOKING BEYOND THE FIELD TEST PORTION, THE GOALS FOR SRI AND CVISN FOR THAT MATTER ARE

•BY 2016 HAVE ALL STATES CORE COMPLIANT
•AND AT LEAST 50% ENGAGED IN EXPANDED CVISN EFFORTS.
