Figure 4 Description: ITS Standards within the National ITS Architecture

Refer to the description below.

Figure 4 is a graphic that is taken from the National ITS Architecture and it is provided to show how the ITS Standards align with the National ITS Architecture. There are four layers to the graphic. The first layer is a Legend that identifies the use of color within the graphic. Next to the word Legend, there are seven small boxes with a word in each. The word describes what the color represents in the graphic as follows:

  • The first box is dark red, representing all Information standards.
  • The second box is blue, representing all Application standards.
  • The third box is green, representing all transport standards.
  • The fourth box is yellow, representing all Subnetwork standards.
  • The fifth box is grey, representing all Plant standards.
  • The sixth box is purple, representing all Cross-Cutting standards.
  • The seventh box is white, representing all Other standards.

The second layer has two large rectangles next to each other. The title in the first rectangle is Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS), which is followed by a set of eight smaller, dark red boxes that list the eight Information standards that support ATIS. They are: SAE J1746, SAE J2266, SAE J2354, SAE 2369, SAE J2540, SAE J2540/1, SAE J2540/2, and SAE J2540/3. The title of the next rectangle to the right is Center and is followed by four boxes titled Emergency Management, Archived Data Management, Traffic Management, and Transit Management. Within the Emergency Management box, five dark red boxes and one purple box identify the five information standards (IEEE 1512, IEEE 1512.1, IEEE 1512.2, IEEE 1512.3, and IEEE 1512.4) and the one cross-cutting standard (SAE J2313). Within the Archived Data Management box, two dark red boxes list the two supporting information standards: ASTM E2665 and ASTM E2468. Within the Traffic Management box, one dark red box lists the one information standard: ITE TMDD, and within the Transit Management box, one dark red box lists the one information standard: APTA TCIP-S-001.

The third layer is comprised of two rectangles also. The first rectangle has the title Wide Area with no standards listed. The second rectangle to the right has the title Fixed-Point to Fixed-Point. This rectangle has the following standards associated with it:

  • Two purple cross-cutting standards: NTCIP 1102 and NTCIP 1104
  • Six blue application standards: NTCIP 1103, NTCIP 2301, NTCIP 2302, NTCIP 2303, NTCIP 2304, NTCIP 2306
  • Four yellow subnetwork standards: NTCIP 2101, NTCIP 2102, NTCIP 2103, NTCIP 2104
  • Two green transport standards: NTCIP 2201 and NTCIP 2202

The fourth and last layer has three rectangles. The first is titled In-Vehicle Systems and has the following associated standards:

  • Four yellow subnetwork standards: SAE J2366/1, SAE J2366/1L, SAE J2366/2, and SAE J1760
  • One green transport standard: SAE J2366/4
  • One blue application standard: SAE J2366/7
  • Two white Other standards: SAE J2399 and SAE J2400

The second rectangle is titled Dedicated Short Range Communications and has the following associated standards:

  • Three yellow subnetwork standards: ASTM E2213, IEEE 802.11P, and IEEE 1609.4
  • Two dark red information standards: IEEE 1455 and SAE J2735
  • Four blue application standards: IEEE 1609.1, IEEE 1609.2, IEEE 1609.0, and IEEE 1609.11
  • One green transport standard: IEEE 1609.3

The third and last rectangle is titled Field Devices and includes the following:

  • Fourteen standards in dark red boxes: IEEE 1570, NTCIP 1201, NTCIP 1202, NTCIP 1203, NTCIP 1204, NTCIP 1205, NTCIP 1206, NTCIP 1207, NTCIP 1208, NTCIP 1209, NTCIP 1210, NTCIP 1211, NTCIP 1212, NTCIP 1213, NTCIP 1214
  • One white other standard: ITE ATC API
  • Three gray plant standards: ITE ATC Controller, ITE ITS Cabinet, and ITE ATC Type 2070
  • A box titled Commercial Vehicle Check/Administration with three information standards (dark red boxes): ANSI TS285, ANSI TS284, and ANSI TS286
