ITS Technology Transfer Initiative
Technology transfer is a new element in the ITS Program. It reflects a desire to institute a process that is focused on ensuring that the results of ITS research become commercially viable and are adopted by the transportation community.
The goal of the technology transfer initiative is to accelerate the transformation of ITS research and prototypes into market-ready technologies that are commercially viable and are adopted by the transportation community. The ITS Program is pursuing multiple efforts in support of technology transfer:
- Provide technical resources and services that make facilitate the adoption of current ITS technologies while supporting early adopters of evolving and new technologies.
- Emphasize the use of open architecture and common standards to accelerate commercialization of ITS research.
- Identify how outreach and professional capacity building can be integrated into the technology, testing, and evaluation lifecycle to involve users in the early resolution of problems to speed market adoption.
- Engage the private sector in opportunities for participation in the Connected Vehicle Test Beds is to support technology transfer and learning.
- Review best practices in technology transfer at other Federal and State agencies, National Laboratories, and universities. The program will adopt a set of procedures for bringing research products to market and for addressing associated issues around patents, licenses, intellectual property, and market incentives.
