ITS PCB All Levels Workshop #1

Florida Department of Transportation District 7 in Tampa, Florida
March 27-28, 2019

This was the first ITS PCB workshop for all levels of ITS education. It was a two-day collaborative event where ITS educators from universities, two-year colleges, and technical high schools, along with practicing professionals, discussed available ITS training products, worked together to identify ITS educational needs for training, and developed strategies to meet those needs.

This workshop attracted approximately sixty (60) ITS professionals representing educators, Federal programs, practitioners (from state Departments of Transportation (DOTs), Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs), and private consultancies), and professional associations (Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITSA), Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), American Public Transportation Association (APTA), American Planning Association (APA), National Association of Development Organizations (NADO), and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO)) that specialize in ITS and planning research, application, or education.

Workshop attendees participated in presentations, tours, break-out sessions, and interactive exercises designed to foster the exchange of information, ideas, and best practices in ITS education.

Workshop Objectives

  1. Define and understand the current—and future—education needs for an entry-level ITS position in the workforce.
  2. Identify and discuss existing tools from the ITS PCB Program and partners that high schools, two-year colleges, and universities can use to help build the necessary ITS capacity in students.
  3. Brainstorm potential solutions from the ITS PCB Program and partners to fill the unmet educational needs.
  4. Collaboratively explore the education continuum to address student needs as they progress in level of ITS learning.
  5. Provide professors with a peer-to-peer opportunity to exchange best practices in ITS education.
