U.S. Department of Transportation Offers Webinar on Essentials of the Smart Columbus Operating System

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) will host a free webinar on the Smart Columbus program's Essentials of the Smart Columbus Operating System. The webinar is scheduled for Wednesday, October 10, from 2:00 to 3:00 PM ET.

BACKGROUND

Through the USDOT's Smart City Challenge, in 2016, the Department selected Columbus, OH, to define what it means to be a "smart city" and serve as a model for other cities wishing to fully integrate innovative technologies--such as automated vehicles, connected vehicles, and applications--into the transportation network. The goal of the Smart Columbus program is to connect people by creating opportunity for city residents to better access jobs and services while improving the overall safety and efficiency of the city's transportation network. The Smart Columbus program is comprised of nine individual projects covering three themes--enabling technologies, emerging technologies, and enhanced human services.

Several characteristics comprise a smart city, but at the core is data. The Smart Columbus Operating System more than just enables a traditional data exchange. It is a system for complex computations and transactions that can ingest and present multiple types of data for game-time decision making, use data for machine learning, and serve as the resource for artificial intelligence. The system is home for applications and services that can be shared across multiple platforms to enrich the user's experience by presenting deeper, more region-specific solutions. The operating system embodies open-data and open-source concepts to enable better decision-making and problem-solving for all users to support a replicable, extensible, and sustainable platform.

WEBINAR DETAILS

An important part of the Smart Columbus program is disseminating lessons learned and best practices to cities across the United States. This webinar will focus on the Smart Columbus Operating System product vision, the approach to establishing the vision, the architecture and design of the operating system, and our development approach using agile methodologies. The Smart Columbus team will also share their thoughts on data management and data privacy and their respective plans.

This webinar is the fifth in a series of webinars focusing on the development and status of the various Smart Columbus program and project activities. To be notified about upcoming webinars, sign up for the Smart Columbus newsletter at: https://smart.columbus.gov/connect/.
