What Is the JPO AI Implementation Approach
The ITS Joint Program Office (ITS JPO) leads a collaborative, multimodal effort to integrate Artificial Intelligence into the nation's transportation fabric. Our approach is grounded in cross-sector coordination across U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) modes, engagement with the private sector and academia, and support for public sector agencies. The program is guided by the following objectives:
Multimodal Research & Understanding
We leverage collaborative research to explore AI's capabilities and limitations. By engaging academic experts and industry leaders, we identify how AI can specifically solve complex challenges across all surface modes.
Collaborative Testing & Validation
Through real-world pilots conducted with state, regional, local, and Tribal agencies, we rigorously evaluate AI solutions. These evaluations provide the objective information necessary to validate safety and effectiveness, encouraging broader implementation across the transportation sector.
Deployment & Demonstration
We work across the public and private sectors to showcase successful AI applications. These deployments are vital for building stakeholder awareness and understanding of the benefits that AI solutions can bring to transportation and how risks can be managed.
Repeatable Resources & Frameworks
To reduce barriers to entry, the ITS JPO delivers curated playbooks, technical tools, and implementation resources. Developed through cross-modal collaboration within USDOT and with peer agency feedback, these resources provide consistent practices and protocols that agencies of all sizes and AI maturities can follow.
Knowledge Sharing & Tech Transfer
We are committed to empowering agencies and practitioners by providing knowledge sharing opportunities and informational materials to advance the adoption of AI solutions in safe, responsible and trustworthy ways.
